"TSUNAMI GHOSTS"

TELL A FRIEND ABOUT THIS STORY

"There's nothing weaker than water. There's also nothing more powerful." - Chinese proverb

I work as a taxi driver in the beautiful resort island of Phuket in Thailand. As you all know by now, our region was hit by a massive tsunami Dec. 26, 2004. It’s a day I’ll never forget for as long as I live. The morning was bright, shiny and hot - perfect beach weather. I arrived at a seaside hotel to pick up my passengers.

I drove a van and as I arrived I saw 4 Swedish tourists – a couple and their two small, beautiful, blonde-haired children, a boy and a girl, waiting outside the entrance. They had booked my services for the morning and afternoon for some sight-seeing. I was to pick them up and go for a visit to a local temple first.

Then the waves hit! I had just started driving off with them. Thinking back, I now realize why I kept hearing the thunderous roar of sea waves for several minutes before the onslaught. This had never happened before!

In an instant, my van became a boat! The street was suddenly filled with raging water and screams! There were wooden planks and furniture floating all around my van. I saw cars, motor bikes, bicycles, trees and worst, literally hundreds of humans of all ages in the brown, angry water. Some of the people tried desperately to cling onto my van.

The couple, I never got their names, panicked. Their frightened children clung tightly to them. Then my van overturned. The rear windows broke and water gushed in! It flushed my passengers out of the vehicle. I managed to hold tight onto the steering wheel!

My poor passengers were swept away! The mother and daughter were found three days later. As of this writing Jan 16, 2005, father and son were still missing. And presumed dead!

I feel so sorry and bad for them. An entire family dead, gone in just a few seconds! How can this be? What have they done to deserve this?

We Thais are mainly Buddhists. We are very religious and superstitious. And YES! We believe in ghosts and the afterlife.

Well, the destruction was massive as you can imagine. You all have probably seen it on TV and cable news.

I am a hard-working, and ordinary man. I have a wife and teenage daughter to feed. Although my house was not damaged, my van was. I managed to salvage it and with help from my government, I had it completely overhauled and now it’s running well again.

Much to my surprise, the tourists started coming back to Phuket about two weeks after the disaster. I thought it would take at least a year for everything to be back to normal! Thanks for the support, guys! Please return as soon as possible. We the working-class of Thailand need you to help us get back on our feet. The incident was a freak of Nature and probably a one-time occurrence. As for the weird happenings here, we are praying hard everyday for the lost souls lurking around to be freed. In time, the place will once again become clean, I am sure of it!

Anyway, I started by job as a courier/taxi driver again. I needed the money bad!

On the evening evening of Jan. 14, 2005, it had begun getting dark. I was driving my van looking for customers when I was hailed by a white man along a row of restaurants. He was wearing a flowery short-sleeved shirt and short pants. And he was carrying what appeared to be a sleeping boy over his shoulder.

He wanted to go to the hotel I mentioned earlier.

"Come in!" I said. He sat behind me and slammed shut the sliding door. “My wife and daughter are missing,” he cried as he placed his still sleeping son on his lap.

“I’m so sorry!”

“We never should have come here! It’s all my fault! We just wanted to get away from the freezing cold in Sweden.”

“It’s not your fault! Nobody’s to be blamed! It’s just an act of Nature!”

“I miss them so much!” he kept on crying. “It’s been over three weeks!”

What he said next made be freeze up!

“Don’t you remember? You were the one who was driving us to the temple just as the waves struck!”

“Oh my God! It was you and your family?!” In an instant I recognized them.

He didn’t answer. I looked at him from the mirror. He was peering back at me in a, well eerie, way.

“You recognize me?” I asked.

Again no answer. He seemed lost. I was taken aback. There are many other vans and taxis available. How did he manage to stop MINE? Was it accidental or coincidence?

"So you and your son managed to surv... er swim to safety?" I was going to use the word 'survive' but decided it wasn't appropriate.

"I am looking for them!" he finally muttered. "I've been looking all over for three weeks!"

I looked at him from my mirror and saw he wiping away his tears.

"STOP RIGHT HERE!" he gushed suddenly, making me jump from my seat! I slammed on the brakes. "They disappeared here!"

Sure enough it was the exact place where my van overturned in the angry waters.

The man flung open the door and carried his son out. Appearing by my window, he said: "I need your help! Can you look after my son while I look for my wife and daughter?"

"But... where are you going to look for them?" I asked, flabbergasted.

"Around here! They must be around here... somewhere!"

"Sir, this place has been cleaned up! There are no longer any dead bodies here anymore!"

"NO! There're here! I know they're here!"

"But..."

"I need your help!" he interrupted. "Look after my son, please." He began to open my door.

"But I..."

"Only for a little while! I'll pay you for it!" he insisted as he thrust his son on my lap.

Immediately, I was taken aback. The boy's body was COLD!

"Your son's body is so cold!" I said.

"He's just sick, that's all!" he replied.

"But..."

"I'll be back in just a few minutes, I promise!" With that he slammed the door shut.

I panicked as I saw him disappear into the crowd, seemingly looking for his family. I looked at the boy. He was well... pale and sickly. The cold from his body was unnerving so I decided to lay him down on the back seat.

Having done that, I shut the door and lighted a cigarette. Pacing about uneasily, I inhaled the smoke deep and long. Half an hour later, I had lost my patience.

I better take the boy to a hospital, I thought. But no, better wait for his father to return.

An hour later, I decided enough was enough. I was going to take the boy to the police station, file a report then perhaps take him to a hospital. I flung open the door, and to my shock, there was nobody inside!

I scream in fright. People on the streets thought I had gone out of my mind!

A crowd gathered and someone asked me what the matter was. I told them everything.

A brave man offered to inspect the van. "There's nobody inside your van but the rear seat is very wet! There is a tiny pool of water on it!"

That was too much to bear and I fainted!
